Disadvantages of Mobile Phones

Nowadays, almost everyone has at least a mobile phone in hand. Modern technology has made this device easier with multi-function. We can use our latest updated smartphone for calling, video chatting, taking photos, messaging, playing games, video capturing, calculating, surfing the internet, and a lot more. At the same time, this electrical device also has its own disadvantages for users. So what are the bad effects of using mobile phones?

First of all, using a mobile phone is a waste of money. A lot of people spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to buy an expensive cell phone rather than spending their money on the necessary things for daily life or to make their future life better. For example, they do not spend their money on education or learning something new.

Secondly, using mobile phones is a waste of time. Even when we don’t need to be mobile, we surf the net or play games making us real addicts. Some people spend more time with their phones watching videos, playing games, or doing useless things. A lot of people, especially kids, are addicted to phones. Some of them don’t even want to go to school without a phone. Nowadays, many students are busy with their phones when the teacher is explaining. They don’t focus on their class lessons.

Furthermore, mobile phones also affect one’s health such as it affects eyesight and brain. Light rays from mobile screens are harmful to the nerve cells in the eyes and according to some studies,  in addition to health, smartphone use affects sleeping patterns among young people. There is solid evidence that having a handheld electronic device in the bedroom is associated with taking longer to fall asleep, less rapid eye movement sleep, and reduced levels of alertness the following day.

Moreover, people who are addicted to smartphones are likely unsociable. The mobile phone is creating a separation between people and they are always focusing on the phone without caring about their family and friends in real life.

Most importantly, in these modern times, the use of mobile phones has become unsafe, especially among teenagers.  Sometimes we never know who is accessing our phones, if we have not kept the privacy of our phones and it can be risky for accessing the phone. Along with losing privacy, cyberbullying is bullying that has become a big concern that can take place over cell phones and other digital devices. Cyberbullying includes sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or mean content about someone else. It can include sharing personal or private information about someone else causing embarrassment or humiliation. Some cyberbullying crosses the line into unlawful or criminal behavior. Victims of cyberbullying may experience lower self-esteem, increased suicidal ideation, and a variety of negative emotional responses including being scared, frustrated, angry, or depressed.

In conclusion, using mobile phones can be hazardous if we don’t use them properly or not for the right purposes. In order to get benefits from phone usage, we should understand clearly how to use it safely and set the privacy on our phones to prevent cyber harassment. Being parents, we should also limit time for both ourselves and the kids and be good examples for them.
